How bus companies price trips
U.S. bus companies use three main pricing models:
- Hourly — for local trips such as weddings, proms, airport transfers and city tours. There is usually a minimum of 3–5 hours, and the clock often starts when the bus leaves the garage.
- Daily — for full-day or multi-day trips, often with a mileage allowance.
- Per mile — for long one-way or round trips, sometimes combined with a daily minimum.
Typical rates by vehicle
These are rough U.S. ranges to help you budget. Real quotes depend on your city, date and demand, so always compare written quotes.
| Vehicle | Seats | Typical hourly range |
|---|---|---|
| Motorcoach | 50–56 | $150–$250 |
| Minibus | 20–35 | $110–$180 |
| School bus | up to ~48 adults | $75–$125 |
| Party bus | 20–40 | $125–$250 |
| Stretch limo | 8–14 | $90–$175 |
| Passenger van | 12–15 | $70–$120 |

Extra fees to ask about
- Driver gratuity and fuel surcharge
- Tolls, parking and permits (airports and national parks may charge buses)
- Driver hotel room for overnight trips
- Cleaning fees (especially party buses) and damage deposits
- “Deadhead” — the cost of the bus driving empty to reach you, if the garage is far away
How to pay less
- Book early, especially for April–June weekends.
- Pick the right size: one motorcoach is often cheaper than two minibuses. Use how many buses do I need?
- Choose a company near your pickup point to avoid deadhead charges. Browse charter bus companies by state and city.
- Ask for an all-in written quote and compare at least three.
Cheapest isn’t always best — check the company’s safety record before you book.

Frequently asked questions
Is the driver tip included in a charter bus quote?
Often not. Many companies suggest 10–20% of the trip price, or a set amount per driver per day. Ask whether gratuity is included before you sign.
Do I pay for the driver’s hotel?
For overnight trips, yes — you usually pay for a separate hotel room for each driver. Federal hours-of-service rules also limit how long a driver can work, so very long days may need a second driver.
When is the cheapest time to rent a bus?
Weekdays outside spring and early summer, and winter months except holidays, are usually cheapest. Booking early helps too.
